So who are Nest?

Nest Marketing is me, Andy Mackenzie – or Macca as people in the industry both colleagues, clients and specialist suppliers know me.

What gets me up in the morning? It’s coming up with creative solutions for things and not leaving it alone until I’m completely happy it’s the best it can be.

My career has included sales promotion, direct marketing, brand marketing, radio, digital marketing, activation, and print design plus
a 2-year period working in showbusiness. But that’s another story. To be honest, I consider the decorating or doing the gardening at home as a creative challenge. Ask my wife. I even had a period making garden gates for people when I couldn’t find the exact ones I wanted!

It's this interest in applying creative thinking to anything that excites me. With the explosion in technology over my career, there’s always something new to get into. My latest obsession is AI images which I know is contentious, but also a useful tool for us creatives.

As an ex-agency partner, executive creative director, art director, writer, designer and manager of production and creative departments, there’s not many things I haven’t experienced. I've sat on awards panels, worked abroad, and worked in large network agencies as well as small start ups. But I just love doing the work. Love the interaction between people on the job making sure everyone feels valued and heard. Always have. Always will. That’s one of the reasons why I chose Nest as my brand name many years ago. An actual nest is to nurtue and help grow. I felt it was a great expression for how I feel about the work and the people I’ve nurtured at various agencies.

And being a ‘restless creative’, I always want to throw in ideas to extend anything I’m involved with. So, just because it’s a print design job, don’t be surprised to get a few thoughts on how it could be extended into digital or activation.

I’m happy to be involved in any way that suits. If that’s coming to work with existing people as part of the team or take on a project in its entirety.

Smarty - Mobile Brand Campaign

Client: Smarty is the value brand of Three Mobile. It gives a good phone and broadband connection for a cheaper price. Their core proposition is simplicity. Against competitors they compared well on price but hadn’t been on tv since launch so lacked awareness. Research suggested people were interested in their simplicity offering when aware of the brand.

Brief: The UK was in lockdown but ending soon. So, the client wanted to be ready with a message of positivity and a desire to celebrate the discovery of this relatively unknown brand. The brief started as awareness building of the brand but it then extended into driving sales via digital, press and VOD.

Solution: The Fist Bump platform was created to represent the joy of discovery and in a covid safe way as we’d seen the start of elbow bumping. The TV was created in a modular way so parts could be updated in a cost-effective way if required (prices, offers). This ended up being a major benefit to the client who extended its use from 6 months to nearly 2 years with 6 versions of the ad featuring tactical pricing and seasonal messaging. So they got good value for money! Shooting during Covid was challenging but the two hottest days of the year gave the perfect background for the feelgood atmosphere the idea was based on.

My role: Working with a copywriter, we created a number of script and campaign ideas. I created all the hand drawn storyboards which we use to sell into their senior management. I was heavily involved with an independent producer I have used many times in selecting directors/production companies to pitch and then working closely with the chosen team to deliver the ad including grading, offline edit, online edit, graphics and sound design. Music choice was a huge part of the job and again working with the producer and a specialist music licensing expert, we landed the track from a famous Los Angeles DJ. For the voice we used actress Katherine Parkinson who I have worked with quite a few times.
